How the Canadian market works

Ontario

Regulated

Regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and managed by iGaming Ontario since April 2022. Operators must be AGCO-registered to serve Ontario players. Affiliate sites covering this market follow strict AGCO rules: welcome bonuses and other inducements are not allowed on public pages.

Alberta

Transitioning

Alberta is moving out of the grey market. Bill 48 received royal assent in May 2025; AGLC set a deadline of 13 July 2026 for operators to apply for licences. Until the regulated market goes live, Alberta visitors see the same content as the rest of Canada.

Rest of Canada

Grey market

Outside Ontario, Canadian players legally use internationally licensed offshore casinos, commonly licensed by the Curaçao Gaming Control Board, Malta Gaming Authority or Kahnawake Gaming Commission. Provincial monopolies (PlayNow, EspaceJeux, PlayAlberta, Atlantic Lottery) coexist with offshore options.

How we keep this guide current
Canada’s online-gambling rules are still changing, most immediately as Alberta moves toward a regulated market under Bill 48 in 2026. We follow official AGCO and AGLC publications and update this guide when the rules actually change. Where the law is unsettled, we say so instead of guessing.

How we review casinos

Every operator goes through the same five-step checklist before we publish a review.

  1. 01

    Licensing first

For Ontario picks we confirm registration with iGaming Ontario. For rest-of-Canada picks we verify the offshore licence and check its enforcement history.

  2. 02

    Real-money tested

We deposit, play, and request a withdrawal before publishing. We report withdrawal timing and verification friction, not just what the operator claims.

  3. 03

    Canadian banking

Interac e-Transfer is essential. We also note Visa Debit, Apple Pay, prepaid options and bank transfers where supported.

  4. 04

    Responsible-gambling tools

Deposit limits, session limits, cooling-off and self-exclusion need to be easy to find. We score down operators that hide them.

  5. 05

    Editorial independence

Operators we link to may pay us a referral commission. They cannot pay for a higher score, a higher rank, or a softer assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Why does your Ontario page not show welcome bonuses?
AGCO rules prohibit affiliate sites from advertising inducements (welcome bonuses, free spins, deposit matches and similar offers) on public pages for the Ontario market. Bonus information for AGCO-licensed operators is only available inside the operator’s own site, once you’ve signed up.
Can I use Interac e-Transfer to deposit?
Yes — Interac e-Transfer is supported by almost every Canadian-facing online casino, both AGCO-registered and offshore. It is usually the fastest and lowest-friction deposit method available to Canadian players.
Will I owe tax on winnings?
For most casual players in Canada, gambling winnings are not taxable income. Professional gamblers and players whose gambling rises to the level of a business may have different obligations. This is general information, not tax advice — check with a Canadian tax professional for your situation.
